San Fernando Valley Poverty Initiative
The San Fernando Valley Poverty Initiative (SFVPI) offers education and training resources for low-income families in Los Angeles. SFVPI builds on previous YPI efforts towards a comprehensive neighborhood solution. This includes the signature poverty program of the City of Los Angeles, the FamilySource Center, as well as the Full-Service Community Schools program funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
The Initiative has developed a PK-20 pipeline for low-income families in the East San Fernando Valley with complementary job training, education and supportive services. SFVPI seeks to increase student academic achievement while working with parents and other adults to increase family income. The basic premise of SFVPI is to saturate the community with high-intensity services in the epicenter of poverty. Resources provided for families include preschool services, charter schools, afterschool programs, physical education and nutrition resources, college preparation, job training, and AmeriCorps members placed in the community to serve residents.
