Afterschool Program$26 Million for Afterschool
The California Department of Education recently awarded the Youth Policy Institute $26 million over five years to operate 21 afterschool programs at elementary, middle, and high schools in Los Angeles. YPI received the most funding of any entity in California in this funding round. YPI is now the afterschool provider at 53 school sites in the city, including 43 charter schools.
YPI Job FairYPI Job Fair Draws 308
The Education & Career Job Fair on July 15th attracted 308 job seekers for 400 positions at YPI, as well as at other employers like Bank of America. Held in Pacoima, the fair also hosted staff from the Van Nuys WorkSource Center and the Northridge WorkSource Center.

Family SummitSecond Annual Family Summit
930 parents and students attended the YPI Family Summit at Bert Corona Charter School in the San Fernando Valley on Saturday, May 30th. A community fair sponsored by YPI's Carol M. White Physical Education Program and the Nell Soto Family Outreach Program, the Summit offered workshops for parents, activities for youth, and health assessments for diabetes, asthma, cholesterol level, dental services, and blood pressure. LAUSD Board President Monica Garcia and LAUSD Board Member Nury Martinez were the featured speakers.
Summer EmploymentYPI Summer Youth Employment Begins
YPI is receiving $500,000 from the City of Los Angeles Community Development Department to provide 250 youth with summer jobs in July and August. Made possible through President Obama's American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the program offers paid employment as well as career development services and college preparation for low-income youth.
Federal AppropriationSan Fernando Valley Poverty Initiative 
With support from Congressman Howard Berman, the Youth Policy Institute was the recipient of a $285,000 federal appropriation for the San Fernando Valley Poverty Initiative. Modeled after President Obama's Promise Neighborhoods and the Harlem Children's Zone, the SFV Poverty Initiative links with existing YPI poverty and education programs such as the Family Development Network.
YPI Charter SchoolsBert Corona Charter School Improves Ranking
YPI's Bert Corona Charter School in Pacoima received a Similar Schools API Rank of 8, signifying that Bert Corona is in the top echelon of middle schools statewide serving a similar population. On June 9th, the Los Angeles Unified School District renewed Bert Corona School's charter for an additional five year term.
AmericorpsNew AmeriCorps Funding
Partnering with the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), YPI will have four additional full-time AmeriCorps members this year to offer job development services as part of the San Fernando Valley Poverty Initiative. Members will train clients for employment, and will provide referrals for critical services, such as emergency medical care, legal services, and linkages to food and shelter.
FTP Graduation Harrison ElementaryFamily Technology Project Graduations 
YPI held six Family Technology Project graduations from February through June 2009 and 146 families graduated from the computer literacy and ownership program. Each graduating family receives a brand-new computer system for their home free of charge, including a printer and high-speed broadband internet access. Participating families have children attending Pacoima Charter School, Harrison Elementary School, Monsenor Oscar Romero Charter School, and Bert Corona Charter School. More than 750 families have graduated from the Family Technology Project since 2001. 
Bert Corona DayLA City Council Observes 'Bert Corona Day' 
Led by Councilmember Richard Alarcon, the Los Angeles City Council proclaimed May 29th 'Bert Corona Day' in Los Angeles.  Bert Corona's family, YPI Executive Director Dixon Slingerland, and students from Bert Corona Charter School addressed the Council in City Hall. The ceremony occurred on Bert Corona's birthday and celebrated his accomplishments as one of the founders of the modern Chicano movement.
SES ProgramSES Tutoring in 2009-11
The California Department of Education re-authorized the Youth Policy Institute in May as a Supplemental Educational Services (SES) tutoring provider for the 2009-11 school years. YPI provided more than 60,000 hours of SES tutoring in the recently completed 2008-09 school year.
Monsenor Romero Charter SchoolMonsenor Romero Charter School Awarded Facility Funding
The California School Finance Authority (CSFA) awarded a State Charter School Facilities Incentive Grant to YPI's Monsenor Oscar Romero Charter School last month. These funds will be used for facility renovations at the school site.
