Art and Science: Our gratitude and thanks to the PwC Charitable Foundation which will allow YPI to establish The Maker Space at San Fernando Institute for Applied Media. The Maker Space, an environment of hands-on, collaborative stations that engage students in project-based Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) learning. These stations include a Movie-Making Station, a Robotics Station, and a Creation Station.
The creation of and engagement in The Maker Space at San Fernando Institute for Applied Media will provide unique and important benefits:
Create a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member develops communication, technological, and leadership skills that foster self-confidence and supports personal growth.
Foster student education and engagement through rigorous project-based learning modalities.
Challenge students to develop problem-solving and interpersonal skills to succeed in the 21st century.
Provide a safe, clean, and friendly environment where students graduate media-literate with a strong foundation in mathematics and science.
San Fernando Institute for Applied Media (SFiAM) is a Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) pilot middle school founded in 2010, currently serves 398 students grades 6-8, and is wholly designated as low-income. SFiAM’s mission is to create a place of learning that empowers students to become confident, functional, prepared, and innovative learners with the technological and leadership skills necessary for the demanding global requirements of the future.
Since its inception, SFiAM has utilized a technology-infused core curriculum that focuses on 21st century skills: communication, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and technology. We're proud to deepen and expand this work!
