City of Los Angeles Day Laborer Centers
The Youth Policy Institute operates two City of Los Angeles Day
Laborer Centers in North Hollywood and Van Nuys. Funded by the Community
Development Department of Los Angeles, YPI has operated the program
since 2004. The day laborer sites offer a neutral meeting ground
for workers pursuing day labor opportunities and employers who
wish to hire them. The program seeks to reduce the congregation
of day laborers at informal meetings areas in the city by establishing
fixed sites.
The Centers provide community outreach and education services
for the very low income workers by offering services to meet their
short and long term prospects. YPI staff organizes recreational
activities (such as soccer tournaments), and works with area businesses
to spearhead community events that provide food, toys, and clothing
for families. YPI provides fully networked computers and unique software systems
such as Sed de Saber to better offer education and training resources. Workers learn computer literacy skills, how to apply
these skills in the workplace, and take classes in basic literacy
and ESL, as well as citizenship preparation.
