We help families save for college by increasing access to financial education and asset building.
We educate families and help them save for college by increasing access to financial education and asset building.
FINANCIAL EDUCATION
The first step to get involved in the program is to sign up for a financial education workshop. Financial education workshops (offered in both Spanish and English) utilize FDIC curricula and address the following topics:
- Budgeting
- Mainstream banking versus check cashing and payday lenders
- Maintaining a savings account
- Acquiring assets
- How to save and pay for college
JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT FINANCE PARK
Additionally, youth in middle and high school have the opportunity to visit the Junior Achievement Finance Park of Southern California. During this day-long visit, youth apply the concepts they have learned in financial workshops by assuming life-like roles through various family and income scenarios. Youth practice money management skills by paying their bills, going shopping, buying a house, buying a car, purchasing insurance, and other real-life activities that require financial literacy and financial planning.
ASSET BUILDING
Asset building begins after participants complete the financial education workshop and become eligible to enroll in YPI’s matched savings accounts. Currently, YPI offers a 3-year savings program with incentives during the first 12 months, ranging from sign-up bonuses to monthly deposit rewards. In addition, participants benefit from zero fees and zero balance requirements throughout the 3-year period.
