in his State of the City speech this morning

2016 graduation rates are now official and across our 10 Promise Neighborhood high schools, the graduation rate was an historic 86.1%. Up 5.6 percentage points from last year. This rate is for the first time higher than the overall California graduation rate of 83.2% despite much higher rates of poverty.

Here’s a closer look at graduation rate progress in the Promise Neighborhood.

Four schools are now above 90%.

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center 97.6%
Cesar Chavez Learning Academies, ArTES 93.0%
Cesar Chavez Learning Academies, Social Justice Humanitas 94.3%
STEM Academy of Hollywood 93.1%
at 70% just two years ago

Two schools had unheard of double-digit gains in one year.

Cesar Chavez Learning Academies, ArTES + 10.9 ppts.
STEM Academy of Hollywood  + 13.5 ppts.

The first graduating class at YPI’s Sylmar Biotech Health Academy had a strikingly high graduation rate of 87.2%.

Mayor Garcetti also highlighted Ilene Garcia’s remarkable story and that of her school, STEM Academy of Hollywood, in his State of the City address today.
