Supplemental Educational Services (SES)
The Youth Policy Institute Supplemental Educational Services (SES) program serves
more than a thousand K-12 students each year. Working with families in the Los Angeles
Unified School District (LAUSD) and charter schools, SES offers
tutoring and project-based learning in English Language Arts and
Mathematics. Eligible families attend Program Improvement schools
required by No Child Left Behind to offer expanded learning options
for students.
Instruction is provided outside of the regular school day (typically
during the hours of 2:30pm -7:30pm Monday through Friday and on
Saturday and Sunday) by credentialed teachers and tutors.
Each student receives thirty hours of tutoring assistance.
Small group and individual tutoring using Scantron and Voyager curricula focuses
on English Language Arts and Mathematics concepts in which students
have a demonstrated need based on individual program assessment,
STAR testing results, and teacher assessments. Authorized by the California Department of Education as a SES
provider since 2004, YPI has built a strong record of achievement.
In the 2008-09 school year, YPI provided over 60,000 hours of SES tutoring for families in Los Angeles.
