On Saturday, October 5, 2013, Youth Policy Institute, in collaboration with Loyola Marymount University and the Education Success Project, hosted its first Education Colloquium with its Los Angeles Promise Neighborhood schools from Pacoima and Hollywood. Over 50 educators participated in the event, including renowned visitors from Queen’s University in Belfast Northern Ireland, to discuss education reform, collaboration and creating strategies to share and implement best practices.
California Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson, was also on hand to discuss statewide reforms impacting education collaborations, Common Core and English Language Learning.
Attendees were given the opportunity to hear from local, national and international experts in these areas to help improve outcomes for LAPN schools. Guests from Northern Ireland, Dr. Gavin Duffy and Mark Baker, shared their experience on how schools develop institutional relationships, effective collaboration, and find success working in challenging contexts such as contested space settings and external civic factors that impact educational engagement.
Prior to the event on Saturday, Dr. Gavin Duffy and Mark Baker had the opportunity to visit select LAPN schools in both Hollywood and Pacoima, to learn about individual school cultures and transformation occurring on the ground in Los Angeles. YPI looks forward to continuing these conversations and hosting another Colloquium in the spring for its LAPN schools. The agency believes this type of convening will have true impact on the schools and the families served.
