U.S. Senator Tim Kaine visited the Los Angeles Promise Neighborhood yesterday and heard from a panel of key partners at YPI's Hollywood FamilySource Center. Senator Kaine is a former Governor of Virginia and Chair of the Democratic Party appointed by President Obama who now represents Virginia in the United States Senate. During his visit, he was greatly impressed by the caliber of public-private partners that the Youth Policy Institute has convened to implement President Obama's signature education and anti-poverty initiative. The LA Promise Neighborhood is working in Hollywood and Pacoima with over 60 partners to blend diverse funding streams around a core set of outcomes and objectives.
Among these partners is actor Tim Robbins, who discussed his plans to expand the outreach of The Actors' Gang to middle schools in the Promise Neighborhood. Former U.S. Representative Howard Berman highlighted the efforts that YPI has made over the past decade to realize the vision of Promise Neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Representatives from the national Promise Neighborhoods Institute, The Annenberg Foundation, the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Unified School District, the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, and National Council of La Raza among others reinforced their commitment to creating a complete cradle-to-career continuum of services as part of the $30 million implementation grant awarded to YPI by the U.S. Department of Education in December 2012.
