Youth-Led Projects Spur Creative Problem-Solving in Local Communities
Los Angeles, CA – July 7, 2010 – Building upon its long-term commitment to community involvement, Starbucks Coffee Company recently awarded more than $1 million in Starbucks™ Shared Planet™ Youth Action Grants in the U.S. The company's goal is to engage 50,000 young people to innovate and take action in their communities by 2015. YPI was selected as a grant recipient in order to advance its efforts toward the YPI Youth Action Program in Los Angeles.
The Starbucks Foundation awarded YPI $17,500 to fund the YPI Youth Action Program. This funding will be used toward supporting young people in making positive change in local L.A. communities. "We're pleased to support organizations that are dedicated to cultivating tomorrow's change-makers," said Ben Packard, Starbucks vice president of Global Responsibility. "We hope our Youth Action Grants will enable a new generation of creative problem-solvers to make a meaningful impact in their communities while gaining valuable life skills."
In 2009, Starbucks awarded more than $2 million in Youth Action Grants, which allowed the company to engage more than 20,000 young people in community activities and reach 42 percent of its 2015 goal.
