From August 9 - 12, 2016, students were welcomed to UCLA via the Peer College Ambassador program. While meeting roommates and new friends, getting a tour of campus, and participating in team-building activities, they're preparing for their college careers in the best possible way!
121 rising seniors participated in workshops led by YPI staff and UCLA Admissions readers. Their college prep topics included: Selecting the Right Major and College; the UC/CSU and Common Application process; the Importance of Extracurricular Activities; Writing a Personal Statement; a Financial Aid Workshop; and Scholarship Do’s and Don’ts. Not only does this program prepare the students to be agents of change at their schools, it also gives many of them their first experience of what living on a college campus is like, making it more tangible and attainable.
YPI’s pilot program last year brought 86 students to UCLA and the results were outstanding. 100% of the students who participated went on to higher education: 78 were admitted to a 4- year university and eight went to a community college. We are hoping to continue the same success with this cohort. The students will be supported back at their schools by our College and Career Advisors and together they will work to strengthen the college going culture at their schools and increase the number of students that go onto post-secondary institutions.
