YPI Receives USDA Grant to Provide Fresh Produce to LA Promise Zone Families

May 22, 2016

YPI’s Community-Supported Agriculture program began in 2014 with support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and YPI was honored on May 22 to receive a second USDA grant from The National Institute of Food and Agriculture, which allows us to dramatically expand access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

YPI’s new Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive program provides “market match” for families purchasing fruits and vegetables with CalFresh benefits (food stamps) by matching each CalFresh dollar at least 1:1 with grant funds, thereby doubling the amount of produce families purchase each month. YPI is proud to partner with Vons and Pavilions grocery stores, the Los Angeles Food Policy Council, and Old Grove Farm Share in this effort to ensure Promise Zone families have the resources to eat healthful foods. YPI is also providing nutrition education and cooking demonstrations as part of the program.
